Fender Benders and God’s Grace

God's Grace

When I was learning how to drive it was an adventure to say the least. I needed all of God’s grace. I was making mistakes left and right, having a few close calls where I narrowly escaped. There were also some moments that may or may not have caused some damage. I was learning what I could and couldn’t do, skirting the line between legal and illegal, and trying to see how fast I could get to where I was going.

One rainy day with learner’s permit in hand and my mom in the passenger’s seat I pulled into the driveway after a successful trip when disaster decided to make an appearance. My wet foot slipped off the edge of the brake and slammed down onto the gas pedal. My mom and I went speeding 0 to 60 right into the side of the garage.

We survived without a scratch… The garage and car did not.

Even with that massive mistake my mom put me back in the driver’s seat the very next day, and helped me learn from my mistakes by facing them head on. She gave me grace and continued to trust me.

HOW GOD GIVES US GRACE

I like to think God hands us the keys while He hops into the passenger seat. He knows we don’t have it all figured out but has confidence we know enough to make the best decisions. We’re asking Him for directions, and relying on His guidance throughout the journey. It’s the same situation as when I was learning to drive, except He’s probably not as nervous as my mom.

God has entrusted us with a brand new shiny car called life. He has given us unique direction with our very own purpose. We have been blessed with all the bells and whistles, the talents and gifts that fit best with our make and model. God’s urging us to step on the gas pedal, make use of the vehicle He’s created us to become and drive towards the purpose we’ve been called to.

Of course He knows we’re going to make mistakes and get in a couple fender benders. He knows we might run at least one red light, and take a few wrong turns along the way. But He promises to do the same thing my mom promised.

To be there, to give grace when we least deserve it, to help us learn from our mistakes, to show us the way, to teach us how to become better, to love us unconditionally mistake filled or mistake free.

WHAT GOD’S GRACE CAN DO

I’ve become a better driver, but I’m still not the best. I haven’t run into any garages lately, but I still make plenty of mistakes. I’ve had to check google maps from time to time when I think I know where I’m going but end up lost. I’ve taken a couple detours, and have absolutely gotten into some accidents.

He continues to reroute me and hand me back the keys. He has faith in me, and I continue to build my faith in Him. I continue to experience God’s grace.
